Josie and Rob - Anne of Cleves House

This was my final wedding of last season, and what a lovely one it was to end on. It was such a warm and intimate occasion. Everyone was so lovely and kind and there was so much love involved.

This wedding took place at the wonderful Anne of Cleves House in Lewes. It is a beautiful medieval home that was given in a divorce settlement between King Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves, his fourth wife. It is located about five minutes walk from the brides childhood home. I met her and her family there. We took the short, but picturesque walk to the venue. which was such a lovely thing to be able to do. What made the choice of venue even more special was that it was where the brides parents had also been married.

I am always in awe of my brides, the work they put into organising their weddings, all in-between working, home life, and a lot of the time, childcare. So many brides invest so much time in making their day perfect, and a lot of them also spend time making favours or decorations to bring a more personal touch to the day. Josie went one better, as she made her own wedding dress, and her daughters bridesmaid dress. I can sew, but I cannot master making clothes, let alone a wedding dress. It was the most beautiful dress, and I have to say, I’m so impressed by her for doing it. The decorations she made were brightly coloured pom poms wreaths and bunting, and even some fabric fortune cookies. The talent obviously runs in the family as Josie’s mum made the stunning wedding cake. it was a beautiful two tier chocolate cake, covered in flowers that matched the colour scheme and the bouquets.

It was such a beautiful and sunny September day, we even got a quick twenty minutes free to walk from Anne of Cleves House to the beautiful Southover Grange Gardens, to take a few Bride and Groom photographs. As I always recommend to my couples it’s a good idea to have that quiet moment with just them and the photographer, a little moment of calm and reflection on what is a crazy busy, but magical day. I love Grange Gardens for photographs. It’s a beautiful green space, that’s full of flowers and trees and different textures. It’s a walled garden, so it feels like your away from everything. Also the beautiful 16th century Grade II listen Manor House is a lovely backdrop. I love to get the chimneys and rooftops in the background of the photographs, sometimes you have to try to avoid other newlyweds though as it is also a registry office.

This was such a wonderful wedding, it was so informal and relaxed. The children were having a blast running around the house and gardens, they were enjoying all that this lovely venue has to offer, even wearing the costumes they have out for any visitors. It was a great day, spent with lovely people to celebrate this wonderful couple.

Sarah & Nick - Anne of Cleves House

It has been a difficult time for all of us in the wedding industry over the last few months, we’ve had all our jobs postponed or cancelled, and in addition for me jobs that have been moved have now clashed with others in 2021 and I have had to subsequently let down my clients, which is something I really hate to do.

Weddings can soon take place with a reception from August 1st, but with only 30 guests and currently most clients would prefer to have an extra guest than a photographer, and take photographs with their mobile phones.

So you would think I do not have any work to post and share on my website and social media platforms, but I was lucky enough to have had the chance to photograph two weddings before lockdown started that I have not yet posted. I thought I would hold off from sharing them because being in the middle of such difficult and sad times I felt people would not want to see other people’s wedding photographs, but as we are moving forward and hopefully into better times I decided it was time I finally shared one of them. Weddings are always days that are full of love, hope and so much joy. I feel it is something we could definitely do with more of at this current time.

The following photographs are a highlight of the wedding of a lovely couple, Sarah and Nick. They married at Southover Grange Gardens in Lewes and then moved a couple of minutes walk down the road to the beautiful Anne of Cleves house for their reception. It was a very intimate ceremony in which they were surrounded by their close friends and family. The bride was walked up the aisle by both her parents. She was wearing a beautiful lace dress that was bought on the high street! She paired it with the most spectacular pink shoes and a beautiful pink bouquet that her friends had made for her. You can guess the theme colour was pink, the groom also had pink socks. The reception was full of lovely personal touches, favours of beautiful succulents, the decor included pink cushion covers and an initialled light display that were all made by the very clever bride. There was even an Anne of Cleves quiz for the guests to do before the evening meal.

All of my couples receive a personalised gift of little felt gingerbread people, and an embroidered keyring (both made by me), that comes with their usb. Couples will receive all edited images on their usb stick, I do not limit the amount of images you will receive. Of course, Sarah and Nick’s usb had to be a pink one!

The food was supplied by Elizabeth Caton Food and Wine and the exquisite pink lemon and elderflower cake was made by Harriet Tamsin Cakes.

I still have some spaces left for 2021, prices start from £500.

Alice and Ed -Anne of Cleves House

I was lucky enough to be asked to photograph the wedding reception of this adorable couple at the stunning Anne of Cleves House in Lewes. I had photographed weddings at Anne of Cleves before, so I felt very comfortable with the venue and I know quite well the lovely people that work there.

There is also a beautiful garden a short 3 minutes walk from the venue, so we went to the beautiful Southover Grange for some couple shots within the colourful flower gardens. It was a glorious sunny day and we were there early evening, so there was a beautiful soft light. Alice looked perfect, she was like a May queen with her flower crown on and surrounded by the stunning blooms of many colours. Alice was perfection in her amazing beaded dress. She looked naturally beautiful and ever so cool. Ed was my first groom in a patterned shirt and I thought he carried it off with aplomb, and looked fabulous.

It was such a lovely day, the couple and their friends didn't take themselves too seriously and had so much fun with their photos. There was many a fun pose and plenty of silliness. It’s brilliant for me as that makes for great photographs that are a representation of the couple and their personalities. I always try to make sure that my couples are relaxed and themselves in their wedding photographs, I don’t want them to pose for photographs in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable.

One of my favourite decorative touches Alice and Ed had was a photograph of their cat, Laszlo, so I decided I would embroider him on their usb keyring, as part of their gift package as well as their gingerbread people avatars.

Lisa & Richard - Anne of Cleves House

I had the chance to photograph another wedding at the beautiful medieval house of Anne of Cleves, in Lewes. I love to do jobs with them as everyone at weddings at Sussex Past are so lovely and friendly.

It is a very elegant venue with so much history, it feels very special to be at an event there. The house has been there since the 15th century, and was gifted to Anne as part of her divorce settlement from Henry VIII. I think she got a pretty good deal, a beautiful home and to keep her head.

This was a very intimate wedding with a very gentle atmosphere. Lisa and Richard love tea, so they had a cream tea for their buffet. The delicious cakes and goodies were supplies by Horam Home Kitchen.

It’s always a privilege to be chosen to be part of a couple’s wedding day, as you are part of their special celebration. A wedding is a very private and personal experience, the day is about love, friendship and family and people have their usual guards down and are more relaxed and joyful. It really is an honour to be chosen to record it, as the photographs will be a part of the couple and family story forever.
